Today was the first day of classes. My global economy class looks alright. The guy teaching it isn't half bad, but I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy the subject matter. Plus, presentations at the end. Fortunately, we get to pick the topic of the presentation, so it's not a total suckfest.

Tomorrow I have a meeting with the Dean of the Language Arts department who will (with luck) let me skip the prerequisites for the two English classes that I'm hoping to take. The classes that I'm supposed to have are basic composition and writing - basically English Workshop all over again. I figure that because I've pretty much had that stuff drilled into me since freshman year of high school, I should be in good shape. The two classes that I want are Modern American Literature and Shakespeare. Neither of which I'm hugely interested in - I really wanted a poetry class - but summer's just around the bend and spring is warm and sunny and I wanted classes that would let me sit outside and read as I bake happily in the sun.

I really love the first day of classes because everyone's a little awkward and everything seems so fresh. I always spend the first week or two imagining how this quarter I'll stay ahead in all my classes and actually do the homework and maybe try a little and get straight A's. Of course that all falls apart about three weeks in when I settle for being a straight B slacker, but I still like the thought that maybe this time I'll try a little. It's a good way to start the month.
